Reading program brings people, pets together


EXPLAINS. [BARKING] REPORTER: THE PETS AT THE BAIMORE HUMANE SOCIETY ARE ALL LOOKING FOR GOOD HOMES BUT IN THE MEANTIME THEY’RE GETTING COMPANIONSHIP FROM SOME KIDS. I REALLY LIKE READING AND BEING WITH ANIMALS SO IT COMBINES THOSE TWO AND IT’S REALLY FUN. REPORTER: STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER, VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO READ BOOKS OUT LOUD TO THE ANIMALS. IT HELPS THESE FUTURE PETS LEARN TO SOCIALIZE ESPECIALLY WITH CHILDREN. BECAUSE IF THEY GET ADOPTED THEY’RE GOING TO BE SPENDING TIME WITH NEW KIDS AND PARENTS AND STUFF SO THEY NEED TO BE USED TO SPENDING TIME WITH PEOPLE. REPORTER: BUT THE PROGRAM IS EVEN MORE BENEFICIAL TO THE STUDENTS WHO GET TO PRACTICE THEIR READING SKILLS IN A NEUTRAL SETTING. STUDIES SHOW THAT KIDS WHO READ ALOUD TO ANIMALS OVER A TEN WEEK PERIOD IMPROVE THEIR LITERACY SKILLS BY 30% WHICH IS HUGE SO THE REASON BEHIND IT IS THE ANIMALS ARE NON-JUDGMENTAL SO THE CHILD CAN SIT THERE AND READ ALOUD AND NOT BE SELF CONSCIOUS AND WORRY THAT SOMEBODY IS CRITIQUING THEM. I THINK IT’S HELPED ME LEARN TO I THINK IT’S HELPED ME LEARN TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE CONFIDENT WHEN I READ. REPORTER: THE BEST PART IS IT IS FUN. THE KIDS HAVE A GREAT TIME PRACTICING READING AND MAKING A FURRY FRIEND AT THE SAME TIME. THEIR TAILS ARE WAGGING AND THEY’RE REALLY PAYING ATTENTION TO YOU AND IT’S SO NICE JUST SEEING THEM STARE AT YOU WHEN YOU READ. REPORTER: BUT THE PROGRAM ISN’T JUST FOR KIDS, THE HUMANE
