Pets on set: Pet safety during storms

WE’RE TALKING ABOUT PET SAFETY. ONE THING WE WERE TALKING ABOUT IS AFTER A STORM LIKE THIS YOU GUYS SEE SO MANY LOST PETS AND YOU’RE TRYING TO PREVENT THIS. DEFINITELY. THE HAWAII HUMANE SOCIETY IS A FIRST RESPONDER AS WELL AS AN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PARTNER WITH THE CITY AND COUNTY. WE GO WORK TOGETHER TO OPEN UP ANIMAL FRIENDLY SHELTERS. THIS IS STORMY. SHE’S A TERRIER MIX AND IS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION TODAY STILL BUT WE WANT EVERYONE TO BE PREPARED FOR THIS STORM SO THE NUMBER ONE RULE IS IF IT’S NOT SAFE FOR YOU, IT’S NOT SAFE FOR YOUR PET SO IF YOU’RE STAYING HOME, DEFINITELY BRING YOUR PETS INSIDE. THEY’RE USUALLY A LITTLE BIT MORE SENSITIVE TO THE WEATHER SO BRING THEM IN NOW. IF YOU’RE GOING TO A SHELTER, YOU DEFINITELY WANT TO MAKE SURE TO BRING AN EMERGENCY KIT. WHAT THAT IS IS THAT YOUR PET MUST COME TO THE SHELTER IN A CARRIER OR CRATE, YOU WANT TO HAVE A PET ID AND COLLAR, A LEASH, A SEVEN TO TEN DAY SUPPLY OF FOOD, WATER, MEDICATIONS, CAT LITTER, THINGS LIKE THAT. A FULL SUPPLY LIST IS AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE, HAWAIIHUMANE.ORG. YOU GUYS ARE GREAT AND YOU’RE GOING TO BE WORKING SO HARD BUT THERE’S LIMITED RESOURCES SO EVERYONE CAN’T EXPECT THAT YOU’RE GOING TO BE THERE FOR EVERYONE. DEFINITELY WE ARE GOING TO BE AT ALL THE SHELTERS, STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS DO MANAGE THAT. WE ARE LOOKING FOR MORE VOLUNTEERS. IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING, CALL 356-2216 AND TALK TO OUR VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR. AGAIN, GREAT INFORMATION TOO ABOUT A LOT OF THE SHELTERS. SOUNDS LIKE WE’LL BE ADDING MORE PET-FRIENDLY SHELTERS BUT THERE’S A CHANCE YOU’LL BE TURNED AWAY IF YOU DON’T HAVE A CRATE OR CARRIER OR LEASH. IMPORTANT INFORMATION. WE CAN KEEP YOU UPDATED ON
