Pets killed in Uptown fire; business steps up to help residents


GINA: GOOD EVENING. I’M GINA SWANSON. FOUR PETS ARE DEAD, AND 7 PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR A NEW PLACE TO LIVE, AFTER THEIR HOMES WENT UP IN FLAMES UPTOWN. NEW ORLEANS FIREFIGHTERS SAY THE ANIMALS LOST THEIR LIVES IN A FOUR-ALARM FIRE ON LOUISIANA AVENUE, NEAR MAGAZINE. WDSU REPORTER JENNIFER CROCKET SHOWS US HOW THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS COMING TOGETHER TO HELP THOSE RESIDENTS.>>THIS IS WHERE THE FIRE STARTED, AROUND TWO O CLOCK THIS MORNING. THIS IS ACTUALLY A FIVE UNIT RENTAL. IT WAS OCCUPIED AT THE TIME. THE SINGLE FAMILY RENTAL NEXT DOOR WAS ALSO DESTROYED BY THE FLAMES. AND YOU CAN SEE FROM THIS SURVEILLANCE VIDEO, JUST HOW CLOSE THE FIRE GOT TO SPREADING TO EVEN MORE BUSINESSES ON MAGAZINE STREET.>>WE WERE ALL JUST ABSOLUTELY AMAZED BY HOW BAD THAT REALLY WAS. REPORTER: THE FIRE TOOK 69 NEW ORLEANS FIRE FIGHTERS AND SUPPORT PERSONNEL NEARLY TWO HOURS TO CONTAIN.>>SO QUICK, SO AGGRESSIVE ABOUT DOING EVERYTHING THEY COULD, ESPECIALLY TO PROTECT AS MUCH LIFE AS POSSIBLE. REPORTER: ALL OF THE PEOPLE ESCAPED ALIVE. BUT 3 DOGS AND A CAT DIED FROM THE SMOKE INSIDE>>THEY LOST A LOT OF PETS IN THERE AND THEY WERE REALLY BROKEN UP ABOUT IT. IT WAS NOT EASY FOR ME TO WATCH. REPORTER: NEIGHBOR ELI BURROWS COULDN’T BELIEVE WHAT HE WAS SEEING. HE WOKE UP TO LIGHTS AND SIRENS FROM 24 FIRE UNITS.>>I LOOKED ACROSS THE STREET AND THERE WAS SMOKE BILLOWING OUT OF THE HOUSE AND JUST A LOT OF FLAMES SORT OF SHOOTING OUT EVERYWHERE. REPORTER: THE FIRE SPREAD QUICKLY.>>SOME OF THE FLAMES WERE ACTUALLY SORT OF JUMPING ONTO THAT CABLE THAT CONNECTS THESE HOUSES TO OUR HOUSES SO WE DIDN’T KNOW IF IT WAS GOING TO JUMP OVER TO OUR HOUSE SO WE WERE A LITTLE BIT WORRIED ABOUT THAT. REPORTER: SEVEN PEOPLE WERE DISPLACED, LOSING EVEYRHING INSIDE. NOW THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS STEPPING IN, TO HELP.>>LETS GET SOME ARTISTS TO DONATE SOME JELWERY AND DO AN AUCTION.
