THE LAB/GOLDEN
RETRIEVER MIX
MAY ACT LIKE AN
AVERAGE PUP.. "NATS"
BUT HE'S MORE
THAN THAT.. HE'S PART OF
THE CANINE
COMPANIONS
FOR
INDEPENDENCE. "HIS JOB, WHEN
I'M FINISHED
WITH HIM, IS TO
HELP A PERSON
WHO IS
DISABLED. PROBABLY
SOMEONE THAT
IS IN A
WHEELCHAIR."
HOLMES LIVES
WITH MARY DAVEY
SHE'S NOT A
PUPPY TRAINER.. BUT MORE OF A
PUPPY RAISER.. "NICE JOB! NICE
JOB!"
DAVEY WILL BE
TEACHING HIM
THE BASICS AT
HOME FOR THE NEXT 18 MONTHS. "HE WILL HAVE
ROUGHLY ABOUT
30-35 SKILLS
THAT HE WILL
HAVE TO LEARN. SOME OF WHICH
PEOPLE DON'T
NORMALLY USE. FOR EXAMPLE, IF
YOU WERE A
DISABLED YOU
MIGHT NEED IT."
AFTER THOSE 18
MONTHS ARE UP.. HE THEN HEADS
DOWN TO A
TRAINING
CENTER IN LONG
ISLAND.. TO LEARN MORE
DIFFICULT TASKS. "HE WILL GO INTO
TRAINING FOR
MORE ADVANCE
THINGS. LIKE
LIGHT SWITCHES
AND PULLING WHEELCHAIRS."
WHILE THE TWO
ARE TOGETHER
FOR A SHORT
AMOUNT OF
TIME.. DAVEY KNOWS
THAT WHAT SHE'S
ABLE TO DO…IS
HELPING
SOMEONE WHO
TRULY NEEDS A DOG LIKE
HOLMES. "WHEN YOU SEE
THE PERSON
THAT'S DISABLED,
THE JOY THAT
THEY HAVE IS
JUST AWESOME. AND TO KNOW
THAT
EVERYTHING YOU
DO MAKES A
DIFFERENCE. EVERYTHING YOU
TEACH THEM,
HAS A PURPOSE."
THE TERM GOOD
