Nellie McKay: “The Dog Song”

I’d like to dedicate this next song to Carmelo, who was put to sleep a couple of days ago, because he got too old. But apparently he was a very nice dog and he always let the cat sleep in the dog bed. ♫ (Dog panting noise) Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh. ♫ ♫ I’m just a’walking my dog, singing my song, strolling along. ♫ ♫ Yeah, it’s just me and my dog, catching some sun. We can’t go wrong. ♫ ♫ My life was lonely and blue. ♫ ♫ Yeah, I was sad as a sailor, ♫ ♫ I was an angry ‘un too. ♫ ♫ Then there was you — appeared when I was entangled with youth and fear, ♫ ♫ and nerves jingle jangled, vermouth and beer were getting me mangled up. ♫ ♫ But then I looked in your eyes ♫ ♫ and I was no more a failure. ♫ ♫ You looked so wacky and wise. ♫ ♫ And I said, “Lord, I’m happy, ’cause I’m just a’walking my dog, ♫ ♫ catching some sun. We can’t go wrong.” ♫ ♫ Yeah, it’s just me and my dog, singing our song, strolling along. ♫ ♫ ‘Cause I don’t care about your hating and your doubt, ♫ ♫ and I don’t care what the politicians spout. ♫ ♫ If you need a companion, why, just go out to the pound, ♫ ♫ and find yourself a hound, and make that doggie proud, ♫ ♫ ’cause that’s what it’s all about. ♫ ♫ (Dog panting noise) Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh. ♫ ♫ My life was tragic and sad. ♫ ♫ I was the archetypal loser. ♫ ♫ I was a pageant gone bad. ♫ ♫ And then there was you — on time, and wagging your tail ♫ ♫ in the cutest mime that you was in jail. ♫ ♫ I said, “Woof, be mine!” and you gave a wail and then ♫ ♫ I was no longer alone. ♫ ♫ And I was no more a boozer. ♫ ♫ We’ll make the happiest home. ♫ ♫ And I said, “Lord, I’m happy, ’cause I’m just a’walking my dog, ♫ ♫ singing my song, strolling along.” ♫ ♫ Yeah, it’s just me and my dog, catching some sun. We can’t go wrong, ♫ ♫ ’cause I don’t care about your hating and your doubt, ♫ ♫ and I don’t care what the politicians spout. ♫ ♫ If you need a companion, why, just go out to the pound, ♫ ♫ and find yourself a hound, and make that doggie proud, ♫ ♫ ’cause that’s what it’s all about, ♫ ♫ that’s what it’s all about, ♫ ♫ that’s what it’s all abou-BOW-WOW-WOW-WOW ♫ ♫ that’s what it’s all about. ♫ ♫ (Dog panting noise) Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh. ♫ Good dog! Thank you.

  1. And sometimes some amie mann victoria teng wannabe ends up in a series of lectures with the stated goal of spreading ideas and knowledge and makes dog noises. Not that there isn't a place for that in some other venue but it seems to go counter to the purpose of the TED lectures. then again it was only five minutes maybe it was an intermission between interesting things or some sort of brain relaxer for people who'd just had their minds blown.

  2. what the hell's a kate bush? Tori amos would probably actually give a lecture on something if she went to TED. She wouldn't devolve to whiney nose singing and dog noises.

  3. You're case being that dog whimpers and childish rambling is equivalent to intelligent thought, and should share a forum with it?
Or that some obscure person that is meaningful to you is meaningless to me?

  4. TED would do very well to eliminate the music from their program. Every musician I've seen them present is of the I-don't-get-it-but-they-say-it's-art variety.

  5. I find this video very emotional and original.
One can also find "memes" in the arts as well. Not all human knowledge is reduced to Science.

  6. very nice… happy song… sorry for the lose of your dog… wonderful memories to keep… yea song happy

  7. I first heard about Nellie when PETA emailed me 'Columbia is Bleeding'. I immediately after more songs and wasn't let down! I love her music!

  8. @uzumakifoxtube Definitely. This song, however, embodies her character. She is a musician who actually HAS a message! It's amazingly refreshing to stumble across artists who are talented but also have a message in terms of politics or human rights and whatnot. 'Ke$ha' released her 'We R Who We R' in lieu of the recent gay suicides, or so she says. There's literally NOTHING about that song that even remotely relates to being gay or the suicides, aside from the titel itself.

  9. creative, original and intelligent ….. a rarity in a world of cookie cutouts…. this woman is a breath of fresh air… more Nellie please.

  10. @jeschinstad oh totally! first time i saw an image of her on her cover art i told a friend how very sharp a look she had. this was before i heard the music – that face just looks whipsmart
