Mice reports at Burke High School lead to more pest control efforts


COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT. KETV NEWSWATCH 7’S CHINH DOAN REPORTS. CHINH: A MOUSE DUMPED IN THE TRAS BURKE HIGH STUDENTS SHARING THE VIDEO ON SOCIAL MEDIA TUESDAY AND SAYING MICE ARE COMMON AT THE SCHOOL.>>I SAW ONE ALIVE JUST LAST THURSDAY AFTER SCHOOL. HE WAS RUNNING UNDER THE FRIDGE, TRYING TO HIDE. I’VE SEEN DEAD ONES IN LIKE APRIL AND MAY. CHINH: ONE STUDENT, WHO ASKED US TO HIDE HER IDENTITY, SAYS MICE AND THEIR DROPPINGS ARE IN THE CEILING, LIBRARY, AND ESPECIALLY CULINARY CLASSROOM.>>STAFF IS REALLY DISGUSTED BECAUSE WHEN YOU’RE IN A CULINARY CLASS, YOU LEARN AL ABOUT SANITATION AND THEY’RE ALL , DISGUSTED AND THEY’RE TRYING THEIR BEST ON WHAT THEY CAN DO AND USING THEIR OWN-OUT- POCKET MONEY TO PAY FOR TRAPS. CHINH: IN A STATEMENT OMAHA , PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAYS BURKE IS UNDERGOING RENOVATIONS AND THAT CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS CAN SOMETIMES DRAW PESTS INTO BUILDING STRUCTURES PARTICULARLY , DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. THE DISTRICT ADDS IN OCTOBER, A TEACHER SPOTTED A MOUSE INSIDE HER CLASSROOM, AND THAT OPS RECEIVED THREE REPORTS OF MICE IN THE SCHOOL SINCE THEN, TELLING ME IT’S BEEN ACTIVELY WORKING TO ENSURE PESTS ARE NOT INSIDE THE BUILDING. THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT TELLS ME IT INSPECTED THE SCHOOL CAFETERIA HERE IN OCTOBER AND DIDN’T SEE ANY ISSUES. THE DEPARTMENT ALSO SAYS IT’S NOT STANDARD TO INSPECT BEYOND THE CAFETERIA, BUT SINCE TODAY, A PARENT CALLED AND COMPLAINED, AN INSPECTOR WILL CHECK INTO REPORTS OF MICE. MEANWHILE, PARENTS ARE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS.>>WHY HASN’T THERE BEEN A MEMO OR SOMETHING ISSUED IN REGARDS TO THIS?
