Man’s Best Friend Goes Missing, Gets Adopted Out By Sacramento County Shelter

$400 AND IF YOU’RE MORE THAN TWO HOURS LATE, IT’S UP TO $800. AN EL DORADO COUNTY MAN FOUND HIS LOST DOG AT THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHELTER BUT EVEN THOUGH THE DOG WAS STILL THERE, IT HAD ALREADY BEEN ADOPTED. SO WHY CAN’T HE BRING THE DOG HOME? CBS13’S KELLY RYAN IS LIVE NOW WITH BOTH SIDES OF THIS STORY. IT’S A TOUGH ONE. THIS MAN SAYS HIS DOG SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN LEGALLY ADOPTED BUT THE SHELTER HERE SAYS HOLD ON A SECOND. ITS MISSION IS TO FIND DOGS SAFE HOMES, DOGS THAT ARE STRAYS, AND HIS DOG CAME IN AS A STRAY. SHE SAID SHE’S NO LONGER IN MY CUSTODY. Reporter: ALEC SAID HIS DOG ROSEMARY GOT OUT FROM HIS HOME IN CAMERON PARK AND HE SEARCHED FOR HER FOR DAYS. A FRIEND ON SOCIAL MEDIA LINKED HIM TO THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER ON BRADSHAW ROAD WITH A PHOTO OF ROSEMARY. HE WENT TO THE SHELTER AND SAW HER AND ASKED FOR HIS DOG BACK. THE OFFICIALS SAY THE DOG WAS FOUND RUNNING AROUND A DOG NEARBY SOME 40 MILES FROM CAMERON PARK WITH NO TAGS AND NO CHIP. A DRIVER CONCERNED ABOUT HER SAFETY BROUGHT HER IN. THE SHELTER SAYS ITS MISSION IS FINDING STRAY DOGS AND CATS SAFE HOME. ALEC SAID HE COULDN’T BELIEVE IT WHEN HE LEARNED HE WAS TOO LATE. SHE SAID ESSENTIALLY THERE’S NOTHING I COULD DO, SHE WASN’T MINE ANYMORE, AND WAS UP TO THE NEW OWNERS. SEVERAL DAYS LATER AN OWNER WHO CLAIMS TO BE THE OWNER CAME TO THE SHELTER SAYING THE DOG WAS HIS AND HE WANTED TO CLAIM IT. UNFORTUNATELY ONCE WE ADOPTED IT OUT, THAT’S A LEGAL BINDING CONTRACT BETWEEN THE COUNTY AND THE NEW ADOPTER, AND LEGALLY THE NEW OWNER IS THE OWNER OF THAT ANIMAL. COMING UP TONIGHT AT 6:00, WE’LL TELL YOU JUST HOW LONG YOU HAVE IF YOUR PET, YOUR DOG OR CAT COMES HERE AND YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT IT AND YOU NEED TO GET THAT DOG OR CAT BACK HOME. WE’LL TELL YOU HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEFORE IT CAN LEGALLY GO UP FOR ADOPTION. WE’LL ALSO TELL YOU SOME SIMPLE STEPS THAT CAN EXTEND THAT PERIOD OF TIME AS WELL. WE’RE CURIOUS IF THE SHELTER EVEN REACHED OUT TO THE NEW OWNER AND EXPLAINED THE CIRCUMSTANCES TO SEE IF THEY WOULD RETURN AND ALLOW THAT DOG TO GO BACK TO HIM. WE’LL CHECK IN WITH YOU AT 6:00. WE RECEIVED THIS STORY FROM A VIEWER TIP. IF YOU HAVE A STORY IDEA, LET US KNOW.
