Looking For A Low-Maintenance Pet? Adopt A Rat

BEEN REPORTED. EVERYONE LOVES DOGS AND CATS AND NOW THAT THE HOLIDAYS ARE OVER — MAYBE YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT A MORE LOW MAINTENENCE PET TO KEEP YOU COMPANY FOR THE REST OF THE WINTER? THIS SUGGESTION MAY BE HARD TO CONSIDER BUT THE NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY’S PAM WIESE CAN SWAY YOU OTHERWISE. PAM ON CAM: IT’S THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS AND WHILE YOU’D LIKE A PET — MAYBE THE THOUGHT OF SPENDING THE REST OF THE WINTER WALKING IN THE ICE AND SNOW DOESN’T APPEAL. SO HOW ABOUT CONSIDERING A SMALLER HOUSE MATE? RATS LIKE ???? HERE ARE INTELLIGENT, SOCIAL AND SURPRISINGLY FUN PETS. VIDEO OF RATS CAGE: CONTRARY TO THEIR REPUTATION, RATS DON’T LIVE IN FILTH. DOMESTICATED RATS ARE VERY CLEAN AND THRIVE IN CAGES COVERED WITH HAY BASED ABSORBENT BEDDING. FOOD AND WATERBOTTLE: IN ADDITION TO FRESH FOOD AND WATER, YOUR RAT NEEDS A PLACE TO FEEL SAFE. A CRITTER HUT WILL DO THE TRICK. WOODEN TOYS OR CARDBOARD TUBES PROVIDE FUN AND MUCH NEEDED CHEWING TO KEEP A RAT’S CONSTANTLY GROWING TEETH IN CHECK. WHEEL AND CRITTER BALL: BECAUSE THEY LOVE TO EXPLORE AND CLIMB THESE BOYS NEED SPACE, AND SOME TOYS AND OBSTACLES LIKE A RUNNING WHEEL OR CRITTER BALL. LIKE ANY OTHER PET, A BORED RAY IS AN UNHAPPY RAT. GROUP: BECAUSE RATS ARE SOCIAL CRITTERS, ROOMMATES ARE RECOMMENDED. LUCKILY, NHS HAS SEVERAL RATS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION RIGHT NOW, AND THEY ARE ALREADY GROUP HOUSED. TRIVIA BREAK: DID YOU KNOW A GROUP OF RATS CAN BE CALLED A MISCHIEF? OUT OF CAGE: THIRTY MINUTES A DAY OUTSIDE THE CAGE IS AN IDEAL WAY TO SOCIALIZE YOUR PET. EVERETTE HERE IS AN INTELLIGENT GUY WHO LOVES PLAYING WITH YOU, RIDING ON YOUR SHOULDER AND CAN EVEN BE TAUGHT TO ANSWER TO HIS NAME, FETCH TOYS OR RUN OBSTACLE COURSES. AND BECAUSE RATS GROW TO BE LARGER CRITTERS, THEY ARE EASIER FOR FAMILIES TO HANDLE. PAM ON CAM: MOST PEOPLE THINK RAT TAILS ARE CREEPY, BUT THIS IS ACTUALLY THE WAY A RAT REGULATES HIS TEMPERATURE. WHEN HOT — MORE BLOOD FLOWS TO THE TAIL TO LET EARL HERE LOSE HEAT AND WHEN HE’S COLD — LESS BLOOD FLOWS INTO THE TAIL — SO HE CAN CONSERVE HEAT. AIR CONDITIONING INCLUDED — HE COULD BE THE PERFECT PET — RIGHT EARL? FOR THE NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY, I’M PAM WIESE. THE NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY IS AT 89-29 FORT STREET. TODAY -AND- TOMORROW — IT’S OPEN FROM -TEN- UNTIL – FIVE-. MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY — FROM -NINE- – UNTIL- -SEVEN-. 1. So many things wrong with this video! Critter balls are litteral torture for rats, that cage with the mesh bottom + that wheel can give them bumble feet, roomates are not "recommended", it's the only way you can adopt them. They're sociable creatures and need a friend or he'll be depressed.

  2. a rat is a high matenaince pet u must give it play time outside of its cage as often as you can AND the cage needs to be very big AND you need atleast to rats because they are pack animals AAAAANNNDD the cage must have lots and lots of stuff in it because they need things like hammocks hanging bird toys hideaways platforms and much more! so if you want a pet rat like i do just do some reserch first because you want the best life for your pet dont you? I um not trying to convince you not to get one because they are beautiful pets. fun fact desmesticated rats clean them selves as much as cats and areless likly to carry diseases than cats or dogs. another fun fact is that rats are not very smelly pets at all also rats love to be handled ( most of the time unless yiu get a agrressive rat which is rare

  3. I would describe rats as medium to high maintenance pets.
    1. Cages need to be cleaned weekly, including replacing/washing the bedding and litter.
    2. They need large cages with lots of toys, accessories, beds, and hideaways.
    3. They need a lot of play time outside the cage, an hour a day is recommended.
    4. Rats are prone to a variety of medical problems, namely respiratory infections, tumours, and bumblefoot.
Honestly, a cat is way lower maintenance than rats.
