Garden & Lawn Pest Control : How to Control Mealybugs

Hi this is Yolanda from Vanveen bulbs dot
com. And in this segment we are going to talk about how to control mealybugs. Now if you
are an organic gardener or sustainable gardener or you try not to use any chemicals in your
garden, you probably have found that you do come up with bugs. Bugs are part of the garden.
And that you have to determine if they are good or bad bugs and if you can live with
them or not. Well mealybugs are a bug that you should not have to live with. Because
they do terrible damage on your plants. And to determine what a mealybug is, they are
just flat little circles they almost look like little stingrays. They are flat on one
side and they just suck on to plants. They are very flat. And they just kind of are in
a circle and little legs that are all the way around them and they are kind of scary.
But you can survive with them and I’ve had more of a problem with them in the house then
out of the house. So with houseplants all I do is throw them in the shower. And just
soak them down, I wash the plant down in the shower. And try to put the leaves up so underneath
is where that they hang out underneath the leaves. So wash all the leaves off. And even
rub it with a towel. Because they’ll come right off but you have to physically wash
them off. And once you’ve done that, whatever is remaining and easy trick is make your own
bug spray using items out of your cupboards. So by making a spray using just regular dish
washing detergent and some vegetable oil or olive oil and maybe half then half and half
water and put it in a spray bottle. And you spray down all your plants. And make sure
underneath the leaves too. And the oil itself will break down the outer shell of the mealybug.
And you’ll find that you can get rid of them very easily that way. By giving your plants
a shower once a month or so, and really washing them down, I found I’ve eliminated a lot of
the bugs that have effected them and just using vegetable oil and even, not even in
the spray bottle I just rub it right on to the bugs, it kills them immediately. And it’s
an easy safe alternative to chemicals.

  1. I live in a semi-wooded area. I get TONS of spiders in the house and yard. I NEVER squash or kill em. I add them to the garden and and put them to work to control pests.
Lady bugs also help for tiny pests.

  2. I thought i have these on my pomegranate but i think it's smaller than a bug,i cannot see it moves or legs or someth…It looks like flour very small and it kills my small tree…

  3. I don't know what I did wrong but I lost over 80 seedlings. They didnt like that spray at all! Half Half Half does it mean the same amount oil water and soap? I put 1 cup water 1 cup oil and 1 cup dish washing liquite in the stray bottle and in the morning everything was dead!

  4. My friend told me to clean them with vegetable oil, so I did that first, I'll follow this and see how it works, but thanks so much and will post my results. 10/19/15
