Dog Training Careers – Dog Jobs

Hello, I’m Sharon Bolt and I’m the founder of Good
Dogs! I’m a dog expert who has been featured in
more than 35 different newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations and I am regularly featured
on BBC Radio Sussex and Surrey where I give advice to the numerous listeners’ doggie
dilemmas. I’ve created a series of videos for people
who want to become professional dog trainers which includes tips on: * How to become a dog trainer – what to do
and where to start * How to calculate your potential dog trainer
salary * How to become a certified dog trainer * How to select the best dog trainer course
and * How to have a successful dog training career. Title: Dog Training Careers During this video I’d like to talk about dog
training careers as it’s a profession that is extremely rewarding and a great job for
people who like working with dogs. Are you thinking of becoming a Dog Trainer
but not sure what to do or where to start? Well, the first thing to decide is whether
you’d like to TRAIN DOGS or teach people HOW to train THEIR dogs.
It may sound the same but there’s a BIG difference. I’ll explain what I mean…
If you want to train dogs without having too much interaction with people then it may be
good for you to contact the big charities like Guide Dogs for the Blind or Hearing Dogs
for Deaf people or any other organization that trains dogs to become Assistance Dogs.
You may also consider speaking to the rescue centres such as the RSPCA to ask how to become
a dog trainer with them. Or you may want to start your own dog trainer
business and set up a residential dog training place yourself, where you have dog owners
bring their dogs to you for you to train them to walk nicely on the lead or to integrate
dogs who are aggressive etc. What most people think of when they consider
a dog training career is to become a dog trainer who runs classes where dog owners bring their
dogs to learn how to train them. Or that the dog trainer goes to people’s houses to hold
personal 1-2-1 consultations. Of course your decision of what option to
take will be strongly influenced by whether you’re a people person or just want to stick
to dogs with very little human interaction! So, let’s look a bit closer at these 2 options…
Let’s start with option 1… If you get a dog training job with a charity
or rescue centre you are likely to be employed by them, you’ll probably have set working
times, a holiday allowance and someone you answer to. You will however be paid a dog
trainer salary by your employers and get to work primarily with dogs.
Option 2 is about becoming a self-employed dog trainer which enables you to choose the
hours and days you want to work, have your vacation when it suits you and be your own
boss. With this option you are not guaranteed a
specific dog trainer salary amount – which may be off putting for some people, however
when you work the money goes in YOUR bank account rather than someone else’s. You are
also able to set your own prices and give yourself pay rises by creating dog training
packages for dog owners to buy. With this option you’ll be working with both dog owners
and their dogs. Whatever option you choose to pursue the best
way to start is to take a good dog trainer course, read lots of books about how to become
a dog trainer and go to as many different dog training seminars and workshops as you
can. Voulunteering at your local rescue centre
or being able to work side-by-side with an established and professional dog trainer would
be great in order for you to get hands on experience of working with dogs and dog owners.
If you would like to become a self-employed dog trainer you’ll also need to study business
and marketing as well as dog training in order to have a successful dog training career. In order to help you with your dog trainer
career, I’ve written an E-book that you can download for FREE, which is called: 3 Simple Steps To Becoming A Successful Dog
