Dog facial recognition app helps families find lost pets

NOW TO THE STORY WE HAD A LITTLE BIT OF A PROBLEM WITH A FEW MINUTES AGO. HIGH, CAITLIN. CAITLIN’S BACK. WE HAD TO COME BACK TO THIS. IT IS SUCH COOL TECHNOLOGY. WE HAVE SO MANY PET OWNERS AROUND THE REGION. THIS TECHNOLOGY, THIS APP, CAN AVOID A LOT OF HEARTACHE. CAITLIN: IT’S WHEN YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS. IT USES FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY TO LINK UP LOST DOGS WITH THEIR OWNERS. I TESTED IT OUT TODAY, AND IT WORKS. FINDING ROVER HAS A SIMPLE MISSION, REUNITE LOST PETS WITH THEIR OWNERS. AND TO DO IT, THEY’VE PARTNERED WITH SCIENTISTS TO CREATE FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY FOR DOGS. WE BASICALLY TAKE 128 POINTS AROUND THE FACE, AND THERE IS TEXTURE AND COLOR AND OTHER THINGS, AND THESE AMAZING SCIENTISTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH FIGURED OUT A WAY TO INDIVIDUALLY RECOGNIZE THESE ANIMALS. PHOEBE, YOU’RE LOST. CAITLIN: IMMEDIATELY, THE LOST PET IS POSTED ONLINE, BUT THERE ARE NO FOUND MATCHES. SO I TAKE A PICTURE OF PHOEBE, AS THOUGH I AM THE FINDER. SO THIS SOUND WILL ALERT HER TO LOOK AT THE CAMERA. CAITLIN: THEN, I TELL THE APP WHERE HER EYES AND NOSE ARE, HIT “DONE,” AND THE FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY STARTS TO WORK. IT’S SEARCHING ALL THE LOST DOG REPORTS. AND LOOK AT THAT, THERE SHE IS. THERE SHE IS. CAITLIN: THE MONTEREY COUNTY SPCA SAYS THIS TECHNOLOGY IS REALLY GOING TO HELP THE WORK THEY DO. THIS LITTLE DOG, SCRUFFS, CAME IN AS A STRAY. CAITLIN: BETH BROOKHOUSER SAYS THEY PICK UP A LOT OF STRAYS, AND IF OWNERS DON’T KNOW WHERE TO LOOK, THEIR PETS CAN STAY LOST. BUT SHE SAYS THE KEY TO MAKING FINDING ROVER WORK IS GETTING PEOPLE ON THE SYSTEM. IF WE HAD 20,000, 30,000, 50,000 PEOPLE HERE IN MONTEREY COUNTY, THESE OWNERS MAY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO EASILY FIND THEIR
