Big Bird Celebrates 50 Years of Sesame Street with a Road Trip

-All this week,
we’re highlighting charities and causes that are out there making a difference
in people’s lives every day. Tonight, we’re taking a look
at one of our favorites. They’re celebrating
their 50th anniversary of helping kids grow smarter,
stronger, and kinder. Here to talk about Sesame Street
and the nonprofit organization behind it, Sesame Workshop, please welcome my favorite
6-year-old, Big Bird! [ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪ -Wow! Big Bird! Whoa! -Look at that.
-[ Chuckles ] Hi, there! -Hi, Jimmy. -Big Bird thank you so much
for being here. -Oh, you know what?
It’s so great to be here, Jimmy. -Yes.
-But it’s way past my bedtime. [ Laughter ]
-I know, I know. -I’m exhausted.
-I know, and I appreciate it. -Oh!
-Now, I want to talk about “Sesame Street” turning
50 years old this year. -That’s right.
-Can you believe that? [ Cheers and applause ]
-Yeah, that’s right. You know, “Sesame Street”
has changed a lot in 50 years, but I’m still 6 years old. [ Laughter ]
-Yes, you are. -I don’t know how that works.
-Me neither. -Did you know how the math
works out on there? -Explain the math on that? No. Big bird, I hear that
you’re going on a road trip this summer.
What’s that all about? -Well, yeah.
I’m going on a big road trip with my friend Nina,
and we’re gonna meet kids all across the US and learn
about where they come from and what they like to do.
-That’s super cool. [ Cheers and applause ]
-Yeah. -I want to mention
the Sesame Workshop. You guys do so many
amazing things for kids. You help kids talk about
certain subjects that are hard to talk about — Divorce, homelessness,
incarceration. You also have a very big
military family initiative. And you’re also bringing
education to refugee children in the Middle East.
That is amazing. [ Cheers and applause ] I don’t know if people know
how much stuff you’re doing. -Well, you know that
my “Sesame Street” pals, they help people all over
the world, and it’s so cool. -Yeah, it is.
-And do you know what happens when you help people, Jimmy?
-No. -Well, it makes you
feel really good right here. -It does make you feel good.
That’s right. Well, Big Bird on behalf
of “The Tonight Show”, I want to say that you
make us feel very good. [ Cheers and applause ] Here’s to 50 more years there,
pal. -Oh, thank you. Thanks, Jimmy.
And you know what? Congratulations to you
on your five-year anniversary. -Thanks.
-Thank you for everything thatyou’vedone.
[ Cheers and applause ] -No, no. Please, please, please.
-Oh, oh, here. Wait, wait. There you go.
-What’s that? [ Audience awws ]
-That’s a feather for luck. -[ Chuckles ] I’m gonna
tape this under my desk. -Do whatever you want with it.
[ Laughter ] -If you want to learn more
about Sesame Workshop’s mission-based work
and how to donate, go to Big Bird, everybody!
Stick around. We’ll be right back
with Stephen Merchant. [ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪
